There we have established a consortium with partners in Tilburg, Berlin, Trento, Stirling, Cracow and Budapest for an ambitious analysis of governance and communication in Europe. For the consortium DOCA has submitted a proposal to the European Commission. DOCA intends to contribute to the analysis with a study of the Internet and 'Europe'.

Mid-term evaluation on the LABOr Project

The European Association of Service Providers for mentally disabled people EASPD developed with the support of the European Commission an expert centre and web-site on employment for mentally disabled people in European countries. In 2003 DOCA has carried out an mid-term evaluation of the project, in co-operation with Cornel Consultancy.

International and European research in the field of social policy

For the Dutch Directorate of Social Policy DOCA has carried out a meta-study in 2002-2003 concerning international and European research in the field of social policy. Some years earlier we had written a conceptual paper on international social policy for the same Directorate, as well as a position paper on 'best social policies' and 'best social practices', in the frame of the Dutch Presidency of the EU in 1997.

Evaluation of two European information media

The yearly General Report and the monthly Bulletin are to be seen as important information and reference media of the EU. Since 1998 both are also published on CD-ROM and on the Internet. DOCA has evaluated both media in 2001 in their various publication forms and it has recommended the Commission on how to improve the future chances of these media, particularly on the Internet.

European grants for international youth organisations

Since more than ten years the European Commission has opened a grant scheme to international youth organisations. So the Commission intended to promote international and European youth participation. In 2002 DOCA has surveyed the most important organisers and stakeholders of the organisations as to assess the (positive) grant effects and to recommend to the Commission on how to improve the scheme, its aims and procedures. The recommendations regarded, among others, the grants for youth organisations in the new Member States of Middle and Eastern Europe.

Mixed communities in three post-communist successor states

In the mixed border regions of Slovenia, the Ukraine and Estonia we have co-ordinated a comparative research project of local teams on the management of ethnic differences. We found various policies and pactices that reinforced with more or less success the vitality of the regions and their population groups. The project was concluded with the publication 'Managing the mix thereafter' (Ljubljana: Institute for Ethnic Studies, 2000) edited by Albina Necak-Lük, Sonja Novak-Lukanovic en George Muskens.

Integration and integration policy in 24 European cities (LIA-programme)

In 24 European cities pilot projects have taken place in 1997-1999 with regard to the integration of ethnic minorities. We have assessed their progress, results and the European dimension of the programme.

Multiculturalism and political integration in Europen cities

John Rex, emeritus professor of 'ethnic relations' at Warwick University, has compared the ethnic, cultural and political integration in eight European cities, in co-operation with local research teams. DOCA's contribution included studies on Rotterdam and Enschede. The contribution is part of 'Multiculturalism and Political Integration in European Cities', a special issue INNOVATION edited by John Rex (1996/1).

Multilingualism and ethnicity in Europe

At the Vienna Centre George Muskens has co-ordinated between 1988 and 1993 a major research programme on multiligualism and ethnicity in Europe. Results were published, among others in his book (with Dennis Ager and Susan Wright of Aston University) 'Language Education for Intercultural Communication' (Multilingual Matters, 1993) and special issues of INNOVATION that he edited with Ronald Pohoryles and Jan Jerschina ('Beyond Multiculturalism?', 1991/2) as well as with Ronald Pohoryles and Ralph Kinnear (Multi-lingualism, Self-organisation and Ethnicity', 1990/3).

Post-communism and the arts: first sociological assessments

Shortly after the opening of the Iron Curtain in 1989 experts from 'both sides' have discussed the new perspectives for art and culture in post-communist Europe. The discussion took place at conferences of the (then) Czecho-Slowak and Austrian Academies of Sciences. The most important contributions we have published with the late Richard Reichardt in the book 'Post-communism and the arts: first sociological assessments' (Kampus Verlag, 1992).

Is there a European sociology?

At the first European Sociological Conference (Vienna, 1992) we have organised a discussion on whether there is really something like a European sociology, beyond or besides the national paradigms. The most important contributions we have published in a special issue INNOVATION ó 'Is There a European Sociology' (1993/2).

Dealing with global networks
